A unique journey and challenge
One of our physicists once said that as a kid he loved sci-fi, and when he grew up the closest thing he found to it was quantum physics. That story captures something essential about Alice & Bob: the sense of wonder that comes with trying to turn what once seemed completely impossible into reality.
Building a quantum computer means building something that has never existed before, there’s no manual to follow, or path already cleared. What we have is a community of people who bring their own skills, curiosity, and humor to the table—and who make this extraordinary challenge feel like an everyday project. Lots of us arrived through physics, others through business or engineering, and some stumbled into quantum almost by accident. Together, we’re learning, inventing, and enjoying the ride.
And while the mission is ambitious, we always make space for the rituals that keep us grounded: great food, lively conversations, and more than a few fun activities.
So, who are the people behind our cat logo, that make up our vibrant Alice & Bob community? In this article, we interview a few of them: Fabrizio, Manon, Rémi, and Daniela, giving a small glimpse into our team and day-to-day life at Alice & Bob…
Fabrizio (Quantum Physicist)
- What’s your role here, in a nutshell?
The overarching objective of what I do is to improve the performance of cat qubits and find new protocols to operate them even more efficiently. This involves conceiving models for a better understanding of our devices, developing efficient numerical methods to study the states of the system, and obtain simplified models to capture the main properties of cat states.
- How did you end up at Alice & Bob?
I was in Colorado for a conference on bosonic codes. I met Jérémie, Ulysse, and Séb from the Alice & Bob team. I fell in love. I came visiting, the environment and research looked amazing. They told me coffee was provided by the company. Done deal.
- How do you pass your time outside of work?
Sports (mainly cycling and swimming). Dinners and hanging out with friends and colleagues. And for longer out-of-office times, travelling.
- Your favorite Alice & Bob slack channel?
The Italian Corner, for very important discussions (mainly on when to get a coffee break) and for the amazing people in the channel. Random (as the name suggests) and Fun-Cycling are excellent channels too!
- What part of the future here feels most exciting?
Seeing the repetition code with cats would be an incredible milestone in quantum science and technology. Getting close to that at every iteration is already very exciting for me. And as a theoretician, each time you manage to predict an experiment it feels like performing a magic trick.
Manon (Senior Financial Planning Analyst)
- What’s your role here, in a nutshell?
I work on the following: reforecasting and monitoring of the budget (100M€ raised during last Series B). I create reportings from rough accounting data to make it analyzable for us and our investors. I support the Innovation team in their projects through the financial part. And a lot of other projects to support growth!
- How did you end up at Alice & Bob?
I wanted to join a project where anything would be possible. When I researched the quantum industry, I realised I was early in the journey and I wanted to be part of it.
- How do you pass your time outside of work?
I run, cycle and swim! I’ve run marathons in Egypt, in Vietnam and in Spain. Then I wanted to ride even bigger distances, so I started cycling and now I do triathlons. I love discovering new landscapes and setting new race goals.
- Your favorite Alice & Bob slack channel?
I hesitate between Fun-Run, Fun-Cycling or Fun-Swim!
- What part of the future here feels most exciting?
The thrilling vibe around this project that might transform Alice & Bob into a deeptech industry major player, with new challenges all the time!
Rémi (Head of Quantum HPC)
- What’s your role here, in a nutshell?
As Head of Quantum HPC, I work with leaders in High Performance Computing to explain the potential of our technology and support them in preparing for the future integration of quantum computers into their data centers.
- How did you end up at Alice & Bob?
I had the opportunity to work with a small group from Alice & Bob during a hackathon organized by Eviden. The team was so smart, humble, and friendly that just a few months later, it was clear I wanted them as my colleagues.
- How do you pass your time outside of work?
I love cooperative boardgames like The Crew, indie video-games like Silksong, and organizing countryside holidays with my family 🌳
- Favorite Alice & Bob slack channel:
Crypto, as cryptology is one of the most exciting fields for early quantum computing applications, with countless novel and cool ideas just waiting around to be discovered.
- What part of the future here feels most exciting?
For the future, I’m equally excited about the first useful applications we’ll run, particularly in chemistry, as I am about the journey itself, especially the development of error correction, as envisioned years ago by the academic community.
Daniela (Junior Quantum Experimentalist)
- What’s your role here, in a nutshell?
As a part of the Calibration team, my role is to contribute to automating the calibration of our cat qubit quantum processors. Qubits are extremely sensitive and need to be constantly fine-tuned. My job is to make all the steps needed for a quantum computer to run automatic, so that eventually future users will be able to use our quantum computers continuously and get reliable outputs.
- How did you end up at Alice & Bob?
I was looking for a company where I could work on quantum physics. I already knew Alice & Bob from my studies and I find that using cat states as qubits is a smart and elegant choice, so naturally I applied to Alice & Bob and that’s how I ended up here!
- How do you pass your time outside of work?
Outside of work I like to spend time doing sports, mostly climbing but also swimming and hiking when possible!
- Your favorite Alice & Bob slack channel?
My favorite Slack channel I think would be Fun-Cool-Plots, a channel where anyone can send a cool plot (a visual representation of a quantum system) they made. For instance you can find plots there that look like paintings or bacterial growth.
- What part of the future here feels most exciting?
What I find most exciting is seeing the building blocks of a quantum computer start to come together, so I am looking forward to seeing how this all plays out in the future!
More than science
Talking with Fabrizio, Manon, Rémi, and Daniela shows that even though we’re chasing one of the most complex challenges in science, we’re also people who swim, climb, cycle, take our coffee very seriously, enjoy cool quantum plots, and sometimes, get fiercely competitive over board games.
