Alice & Bob is born

Nature Physics publishes Raphaël Lescanne’s work on cat qubits, a new type of quantum bit inherently protected from a whole class of errors: ”bit-flips”.

Raphaël’s fellow PhD student, Théau, convinces him to start Alice & Bob and, together, to bring cat qubits from the lab to industry.

Cats hit the road

Alice & Bob closes its first 3M€ fundraising.

A scientific board, composed of quantum physics scholars from leading research institutions, is formed. Within the following month, the team grows to 10 researchers.

November

Home sweet home

Alice & Bob grows to 32 people and moves out of the research lab for the first time, opening its headquarters in Paris and installing a cryostat there.

Within the next few months, the first cat qubit chip, Boson 1, is ‘cold’ and ready for testing in Alice & Bob’s new home.

Series A

In a successful experiment an Alice & Bob chip establishes a world record: 100 seconds without experiencing a bit-flip error.

Investors recognize A&B’s potential and sign a 27M€ series A.

60x better

Alice & Bob publishes theoretical evidences that using cats you would need 60 times fewer qubits to run powerful quantum algorithms compared to other state-of-the-art architectures.

In the lab, the first operations between qubits are performed on the Hydrogen chip series.

A&B goes overseas

Alice & Bob expands outside of France, opening a branch in Boston, US.

The following month, the first notebook to emulate a cat-qubit-based quantum system is distributed by Alice & Bob’s new partners, Equinix and OVH Cloud.

Alice & Bob proposes a novel error correction technique, now a cat-qubit-based quantum computer would need ~200 times fewer qubits to run powerful quantum algorithms compared to other state-of-the-art architectures.

January

Series B

Alice & Bob closes a €100M Series B, and the work to build their fourth and largest location can finally begin: a 4000m² state-of-the-art research and development facility in Paris.

A cat that won't flip

Alice & Bob beats its previous bit-flip lifetime record, measuring an average of 44 minutes without bit-flips in a lab experiment.

NVIDIA backs Alice & Bob

NVIDIA invests in Alice & Bob through NVentures, NVIDIA's venture capital arm, in an extension of its Series B round.

The investment comes after two years of close technical collaboration, notably on NVIDIA NVQLink and CUDA-Q.
